Telford is getting ready to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee as Her Majesty marks her 70th year on the throne. The Queen will be the second-longest reigning Monarch in history at the age of 96, a tribute to her resilience and her dedication in serving the British people.
Across Telford, we will be celebrating the Jubilee in style with street parties, fairs, fetes and community events bringing our community together in in the true spirit of our town. It is a tribute to her Majesty and an opportunity for thanksgiving as we mark this momentous event in our history across a four-day bank holiday weekend. In Telford, we will begin the celebrations with the lighting of a beacon on the Wrekin on Thursday, 2nd June.
There is an extensive programme of Jubilee events in London including the Queen's Birthday Parade, Trooping the Colour, a Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul's Cathedral, and a Platinum Party at Buckingham Palace. In Telford we will be able to follow these historic events on big screens. On Saturday, 4th June there will be a big lunch in Telford Town Park and a concert and picnic the following day. The last few years have been challenging for everyone and the Jubilee will be an opportunity to remind ourselves of the value of community, the way we come together to support each other and the value of public service. Many Telford residents are also in line to receive a Platinum Jubilee Medal, awarded to frontline members of the emergency services, prison service and armed forces as a personal token of gratitude for their service from the Queen.
In Parliament, MPs have personally funded two Jubilee Sculptures which will form a symbolic representation of the Queen’s reign at the heart of our democracy. It is hoped that these monuments will stand long into the future and represent our deep and lasting gratitude, on behalf of all our constituents, for the personal service of her Majesty to the nation.
