Following the recent storms, Lucy Allan MP has arranged for Flooding Minister Rebecca Pow MP to visit Ironbridge today to meet with the Environment Agency, Emergency Services, local traders and residents.
It is crucial for Ministers to see the situation on the ground to better understand the needs of the Ironbridge community and the responses they require from Government. It is encouraging that flood defences on the Wharfage have held following three consecutive storms last week, with water levels peaking at 6.6 metres, just below the top of the defences in place. There is however no room for complacency and Lucy is pushing for a suitable long-term solution that provides certainty for those who live and work in Ironbridge.
Minister Pow has visited Ironbridge before and knows the town and its troubles with regular flooding well. She has consistently voiced support for a long-term solution to the management of the River Severn and the necessity of flood defences to protect lives and livelihoods.
Lucy Allan MP said:
"I am grateful that the Minister takes flooding in Ironbridge seriously and has been very receptive to my requests for a long-term solution to the regular flooding experienced by residents and traders. I am grateful that the flood defences have held back the swell from properties on the Wharfage. I will continue to lobby my colleagues at the Department for the Environment on behalf of those who live in Ironbridge."
