Lucy Allan MP has issued a statement following the third storm in a week to threaten the flood defences in Ironbridge Gorge:
"This is a hugely difficult time for Ironbridge residents and traders who have faced three major storms in a week. The flood defences seem likely to come under serious pressure this year with risk of overtopping as the river reaches its peak tomorrow (Tuesday, 22nd February). As a precautionary measure some residents have been helped to evacuate for their safety.
Whilst flooding is almost an annual event in Ironbridge, this series of storms has made this year worse than in recent years in terms of risk to life as the volume of the River Severn is at historic levels.
As ever, the Environment Agency, Emergency Services and Council Officers are working incredibly hard to support residents and protect businesses and livelihoods. I will continue monitor events closely and to work with the Local Resilience Forum and relevant agencies to ensure everything possible is being done to protect the community. I know how devastating this can be for residents and traders.
The Government takes the issue of regular flooding along the River Severn very seriously and last year both Environment Ministers George Eustice and Rebecca Pow came to Ironbridge to see for themselves the impact on our area. I have been reassured that long-term strategic management of the River Severn is a priority. I will continue to make representations to the Government for the maximum level of support for my constituents affected by flooding. The Government has already demonstrated its commitment to Ironbridge through resilience funding which has helped to fund flood defences and long-term water course management. I will continue to keep residents updated."
