This morning at the Health and Social Care Committee, Lucy asked the Chief Medical officer, Chris Whitty, whether he was able to set out a roadmap out of the pandemic.
Lucy asked the CMO whether potential new variants would lock us into a cycle of lockdowns, but Mr Whitty was hopeful that a combination of increased immunity in the population and ground breaking new treatments and antivirals will help to deal with any new variants far more effectively than before.
The CMO was positive in his assessment that throughout the course of the pandemic, the response has been much quicker and more effective than he could have hoped. Vaccines, testing and effective treatments were developed far sooner than he could have predicted.
