The UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has now approved three vaccines, after meeting their strict standards of safety, quality, and effectiveness. The three vaccines, in order of date approval, have been developed by Pfizer BioNTech, Oxford/AstraZeneca and Moderna.
The UK has a very successful record delivering vaccination programmes to date. The UK will be able to deliver at least 2 million vaccinations across England each week by the end of January. This will include all residents and staff in the country's 10,000 care homes.
By 15th February the aim is to have offered a first vaccine dose to everyone in the top four priority groups identified by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI).
2,700 vaccination sites will be open across the UK, and by the end of January everyone in England will be within 10 miles of a vaccination site.
The 4 UK chief medical officers have taken a joint approach in their advice regarding the vaccine and securing supply of vaccines is a UK-wide effort.
This plan describes how the UK was able to build up a massive supply of vaccines and how it is planning to deploy them. The Prime Minister has committed to ensuring absolute transparency over the vaccination programme to ensure public trust.
