The Local Government secretary, the Rt. Hon. Robert Jenrick MP, has announced £1.6bn of additional funding to support local authorities responding to the Covid-19 pandemic. This funding is intended to help local authorities address the pressures they are facing across their services. It can now be confirmed that Telford & Wrekin Council will receive an extra £5,166,721.
The funding is intended to cover the first phase of the Government's response to coronavirus and the Local Government Secretary has said he expects payments to be made on Friday, 3rd April to ensure Local Authorities have the confidence to continue with their work. The Local Government Secretary has been clear that local authorities will be fully compensated for the loss of income associated with granting the expanded reliefs the Government has asked them to administer.
The Local Government Secretary has also confirmed that the £500 million Hardship Fund which will provide council tax relief to financially vulnerable people. This will be administered by Telford & Wrekin Council. The funding will enable further reductions in council tax for working age people in receipt of local council tax support.
Local authorities will also be able to use the Hardship Fund to provide further discretionary support through other support arrangements such as Local Welfare Schemes.
