I am delighted that Telford & Wrekin Council are supporting proposals for a standalone emergency care centre at an accessible location between Telford and Shrewsbury.
The current Future Fit proposal to locate critical care at Royal Shrewsbury also includes 12 hour A&E at the Princess Royal Hospital. However this part time A&E option is not popular with clinicians and it is not clear whether they would implement the proposal.
The standalone option has always been on the table, but was seen as too expensive. However, with a new Government and a new commitment to the NHS, this could prove to be a practical compromise which brings the County together and delivers better patient care far more promptly than the RSH option. I welcome the Council’s approach to seek to unify the County and I believe it is helpful in securing the very best health outcomes for our residents.
I am meeting the Chair of the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust and the Chief Executive today to make the case for this model. I will also be raising maternity malpractice cases and the hospital trust’s response.
