On Wednesday, 15th January, Lucy secured an adjournment debate in the House of Commons chamber to raise the subject of maternity care at the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital trust (SaTH).
The Ockenden review, chaired by Donna Ockenden, is investigating a number of baby deaths at SaTH. Initially charged with the examination of 23 cases, it was revealed by the Minister last night that the current figure is now closer to 900.
The former Health Secretary, the Rt. Hon. Jeremy Hunt MP, described this revelation as "deeply shocking" and noted that "the scale of potential avoidable death at Shrewsbury and Telford may be no different from that at Mid Staffs".
Lucy is clear that "we want users of maternity services to have absolute confidence in the care that they receive". Residents of Telford should know that the issue of maternity care is one of Lucy's main priorities over the next parliament and she will be taking every opportunity to raise these matters in the House and with the relevant Ministers.
