Robert Halfon MP member of the New Towns APPG who represents Harlow has criticised the quality of housing of new build developments in his constituency.
The quality of new build homes in Telford has also been raised on several occasion by local MP, Lucy Allan, particularly homes in the Lawley development.
This issue was again raised today with the Leader of the House, Mel Stride MP during Business Question’s in Parliament.
Mr Halfon said:
“I met a group of residents, many of them on Help to Buy schemes, who have moved into homes built by Persimmon that are shoddily built, suffering from damp and crumbling walls.
“In the eyes of my residents, Persimmon are crooks, cowboys and con artists. Will the Prime Minister, hold this company to account, make sure residents get proper compensation and urge the chief executive to come to Harlow to meet with me and these families.”
The prime minister replied:
“My Right Honourable friend makes a very important point that as we increase the housing supply, the quality of new build homes continues to improve.
“We do expect good quality homes and we have set out our plans for a New Homes Ombudsman, to protect the rights of homebuyers and hold developers to account.”
Lucy Allan said:
“This is such an important issue which particularly affects new towns and Telford has had the same problems raised by residents.
“I will be joining colleagues to work with ministers to ensure new build homes have quality standards.”
