Today in Parliament, the Education Select Committee held an evidence session with East Sussex County Council and the London Borough of Newham as part of the special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) inquiry.
The Committee previously held a session with local authorities in February. This second hearing was a further chance to explore the approach of different councils to supporting children with SEND and to follow-up on some of the evidence already heard during the inquiry.
The SEND inquiry is examining the success of the Government’s 2014 reforms to the SEND system. It is exploring how they have been implemented, and what impact they are having in meeting the challenges faced by children and young people with SEND.
Local MP, Lucy Allan who has been a member of the Education Committee since 2015 took the opportunity to ask the panel about their implementation grants and whether they have felt that they had been used for their intended purposes.
Lucy Allan said:
“I was pleased to have the opportunity to question officers from local authorities to make sure that children with educational needs and disabilities are getting the help they need.
“It is so important that this area functions well so that all children can succeed and make the best of their talents.”
