Telford MP, Lucy Allan has joined with MPs from across Parliament to write to Chancellor of the Exchequer Phillip Hammond calling for a cut to fuel duty in the forthcoming Autumn Statement.
In addition to calling for a fuel duty cut, the letter requests the formation of watchdog to monitor the prices at petrol station forecourts to prevent predatory pricing from oil companies. Forecourt prices do not accurately reflect wholesale oil prices, with increases in oil cost passed on quicker to motorists than the savings from when oil falls.
The letter prepared by the FairFuel All Party Parliamentary Group was signed by more than 50 MPs and organised by Dover and Deal MP, Charlie Elphicke.
Speaking on why fuel duty should be cut, Lucy Allan MP said: “Cutting fuel duty will put more money back in the pockets of people in Telford.
“A cut in duty would not only benefit motorists, but businesses and consumers alike as the cost of shipping and delivering drops.
“The freeze in fuel duty since 2011 has been welcomed by all, but as prices are increasing again at the pump now is the right time to cut this duty.
“The creation of a watchdog to monitor fuel prices would be a further boost to motorists by stopping the rip off practice of fuel companies that are quick to take advantage of price changes, but slow to pass this onto consumers.”
