Statement by Lucy Allan MP:
"The death of George Floyd as result of police brutality in Minneapolis has been a hugely shocking and defining moment for the United States but also for us in the UK.
The United States has had long history of police brutality against African-Americans and too often the justice system fails these victims. It is unconscionable that African-Americans should experience racism, brutality and injustice at the hands of the State. That this is still happening in 2020 is horrific and should be condemned in the strongest possible terms.
Inequality, discrimination and racism exists not just in America, but also in other countries, including our own. All those in positions of power and in leadership positions should speak out and commit to working to creating a fairer and more equal society. The United Kingdom is a successful example of a multicultural society, but there is no room for complacency and there is more work to do to tackle inequality, discrimination and racism.
I am heartened by the wide outpouring of support to defeat racism and the struggle for equality that we have seen following the brutal death of George Floyd. It is clear that there is a wide consensus here in the UK over the principles of justice, fairness and equality and I am proud that we are all united in our condemnation of this horrendous act.
We are fortunate to live in a country with a largely unarmed police force which polices by consent. Our police and emergency services work extremely hard often in very difficult circumstances to keep us safe and for that I am very grateful."
