Telford MP Lucy Allan has welcomed the Prime Minister’s announcement of changes to how we achieve Net Zero by 2050.
Governments around the world have embraced an approach to net zero that would cost households and taxpayers billions without proper debate or public consent, increasing commitments on behalf of people without being clear and honest about the costs and trade-offs required.
Whilst the destination of Net Zero by 2050 remains, the PM has announced that the method of getting there will be changed. No longer will consumers be forced to take expensive measures and instead the market will be able to drive the transition.
The UK is already a global leader in reducing carbon emissions and is ahead of all its climate targets. Now is not the time for Government to increase the costs and burdens on taxpayers and households.
Lucy Allan MP said:
Rishi Sunak is doing exactly the right thing. He’s being honest with people about the cost of implementing net zero where previous Governments have not been clear with the British public about the costs and sacrifices involved.
He is also clear that we should not be stumbling into policies that do not have public consent. There was no democratic consent for the measures that were due to be levied on every household to achieve climate goals.
People care about the environment and recognise that we must make our contribution in reducing global carbon emissions. However, no one consented to be poorer or colder than neighbouring countries, simply because politicians want to ‘lead the world'.
The Prime Minister is right to be honest with people about the costs of the track we were on and the PM’s announcement will allow my constituents to keep more of the money they earn whilst keeping us on the same path to net zero as our competitors.
