For my last journal column of the year, I wanted to reflect on some of the successful outcomes achieved this year.
Significant progress has been made on the future of the Princess Royal, with Same Day Emergency Care now remaining in Telford, in addition to a new diagnostic hub and surgical ward. Most 24/7 services will also be retained in a major shift to the original Future Fit proposals. This new clinician-devised model will improve healthcare for residents, and it is crucial we now deliver these benefits as soon as possible.
In March, we saw the publication of the Ockenden Review of maternity care, bringing some closure to families affected by maternity malpractice at the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust. Some of the most challenging cases I have listened to as an MP were of those families affected, facing a culture of complacency from the Doctors who they relied on. It is encouraging that significant improvements have been made across the Trust since. Patient safety is a priority for me and is something I am working to raise the profile of through my Membership of the Health and Social Care Committee.
Tom Crowther QC released his final report of the IITCSE inquiry into CSE in Telford in July. The report was thorough and comprehensive, raising questions about the response of the authorities to victims and their attitude to safeguarding. The quality of Mr Crowther’s work has set the standard for reports of this kind, and I will hold the Police and the Council to account for their delivery on the report’s recommendations.
Finally, Telford was selected as a recipient of the Government’s Towns Fund initiative, receiving £22.3 million for regeneration projects across Telford. The first part of this project is the regeneration of the station quarter and the construction of a new maths and digital skills centre, providing opportunities and training for residents to secure the jobs of the future.
Next year I will continue to fight on behalf of my constituents for better healthcare, more skills, investment in Telford, and for all those who are victims of crime or injustice, whose voices go unheard.
