This has been a period of extraordinary turmoil in Parliament and in the Conservative Party. People have been understandably disconcerted by the turmoil of recent political events. I am grateful to those who have shared their concerns with me. I am pleased that with the new Prime Minister now in post we can look forward to a more settled period of government in the remaining years of this parliament.
The most pressing need for the Country is stable government. To deliver stable government a Prime Minister must have the support of the majority of Members of Parliament, or government business cannot get through Parliament. The country needs stability because it faces huge economic challenges both domestic and global and must also deliver the 2019 manifesto on which I was elected as Telford MP. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak commands the support of parliament and can form a stable government to deliver a Conservative agenda for the Country. As a result, the mood in Westminster amongst MPs has fundamentally changed and there is a new sense of unity and purpose as we get on with tackling the challenges ahead.
I am confident that Rishi Sunak will provide the economic and political stability the nation needs. He has the experience to navigate the country through these difficult times. The Prime Minister is an exceptionally capable politician with a firm grip on the public finances. He is personable and highly respected. It was Rishi Sunak who went above and beyond to protect so many businesses in Telford during the pandemic, whether through bounce back loans, furlough or from the discretionary funds allocated to the Council. Countless jobs and businesses in Telford were protected as a direct result of his decisive action at this time of greatest need. I am sure he has what it takes to drive our recovery whilst safeguarding those most in need.
Everyone in Telford will have different views on recent events, but I am heartened that many just want to see the country come together and move forward. I am optimistic that the political uncertainty is behind us, and I will be working with the Prime Minister to ensure Telford gets through the economic challenges we face, so we can look ahead to a more secure future.
