As part of today's comprehensive budget, the Chancellor announced huge investment in flood defences and noted Lucy Allan MP's lobbying to secure support for the residents and businesses of Ironbridge who were affected by this winter's flooding.
The Chancellor has announced that £120 million will be immediately released to repair damaged flood defences and a further £200 million provided to build long-term resilience in areas such as Ironbridge that suffer from repeated flooding. In addition, funding for improved flood defences and schemes has been doubled to £5.2 billion over the next 6 years.
Lucy Allan MP said:
"I am pleased to hear from the Chancellor a strong response on flooding and in particular a mention for Telford. Much of this funding is to build flood resilience and is going to directly to the local community. This is hugely welcome to homes and businesses in Ironbridge and it is great that our community is on the Chancellor’s radar."
The Chancellor, the Rt. Hon. Rishi Sunak MP said:
“Many Members around this House will have seen the devastating impact of the recent floods on homes and businesses in their own constituencies, particularly the hon. Member for Barnsley East (Stephanie Peacock), my hon. Friends the Members for Calder Valley (Craig Whittaker) and for Telford (Lucy Allan), and my right hon. Friend the Member for Ludlow (Philip Dunne). I can announce today that I am making £120 million available immediately to repair all defences damaged in the winter floods. To support those areas that have been repeatedly flooded, I am also providing £200 million of funding directly to local communities to build their flood resilience. To protect people and over 300,000 properties, I am doubling our investment in flood defences over the next six years to £5.2 billion.”
