In March, Year 5 pupils at Dawley Primary Academy wrote to Lucy to ask about the war in Ukraine and what support the UK was providing. Lucy responded to each pupil and was pleased to accept an invitation to visit the school today.
Lucy met with Year 5 to hold a question-and-answer session with the children. The children asked about how the aid provided to Ukraine and to refugees from war and were particularly interested to hear about the Homes for Ukraine scheme, which will settle 140 refugees with families in Telford.
Engaging with young people on issues that will affect their future is incredibly important and it is a key part of an Lucy’s role as local MP to meet and speak with children growing up in Telford.

It’s always a pleasure to visit Dawley Primary, but today was particularly special. Ms Woodhouse’s class (Year 5) wanted to talk to me about how they felt about war in Ukraine and ask about the impact on children, society, housing and the future.
The children had written in March to tell me what concerned them and invited me to visit to take questions. I found them to be an incredibly well informed, inquiring and thoughtful group of children. They wanted to talk about President Zelensky, sanctions, propaganda, peace, NATO, Putin, freedom, nuclear weapons, refugees and what they themselves could do to help.
The children listened to each other, put their own views across with confidence and clearly cared passionately about all aspects of the war. They understood why it was so important for us to help Ukraine.
One of the most rewarding things you can do as an MP is to visit local schools and speak to pupils about politics and current affairs. I am very grateful to the school for extending an invitation and look forward to visiting again soon.
