Today, Lucy Allan MP is launching her Telford Bus Survey.
The bus services in Telford are vital for many residents, especially the elderly and schoolchildren, who rely on them to get around the town. Buses are the most popular form of public transport in the UK. Bus services do not just allow commuters to travel form place to place, they also enable people to access opportunities, skilled jobs and business opportunities. Proper bus connectivity can generate economic growth for our cities, towns and regions.
Plans are underway to make high quality bus services the norm for every community. Indeed, the Government has recently announced an investment of £5 billion to boost bus and cycle links for every region outside London over five years.
Lucy has welcomed the Government’s £220 million package to overhaul bus services across England and that a further £30 million of funding has been confirmed for 2020-21. This funding will provide more cash directly for local authorities to improve current services and see cuts to certain services reversed. It will also bring about the first ‘Superbus’ network, which will have low fares and more bus priority measures. The process of rolling-out contactless payments on all buses will be set in motion too, and the package will also provide a fund for trialling on-demand services.
Ministers have also committed to create Britain’s first all-electric bus town, and local authorities can now apply for this status. The winning bidder will receive up to £50 million to introduce a fleet of new electric buses.
Lucy Allan MP said:
"This survey will give me a greater insight into what people think about our local bus services, and an opportunity to raise their suggestions for its improvement. I look forward to hearing directly from residents on what they wish to see from the buses in Telford."
