Today at the Health and Social Care Committee, Lucy had the opportunity to put questions to Professor Sir Chris Whitty, the UK’s Chief Medical Officer as part of the Committee’s inquiry into preventing ill health.
Lucy focused her questions on health inequalities and how to prevent health disparities. People living in areas of deprivation experience not only a shorter life span, but spend more years living with poor health than people living in more affluent areas. The poorer the person is the greater the proportion of their life will be spent in poor health.
Lucy Allan MP said:
Telford has some of the poorest communities in England and the impact is seen in the health outcomes of local people across every measure. I was so pleased to see Professor Sir Chris Whitty focus so much of his attention on this critical issue today.
I have raised this issue in Parliament many times and I will continue to fight for better health outcomes for Telford residents. I am encouraged by the meetings I held last week with the Chief Executive of the Hospital Trust and the Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin Integrated Care Board and to receive assurances that these issues are being proactively tackled by local NHS Management.
