Telford MP Lucy Allan is delighted at the news that Shropshire Wooden Spoon won the inaugural Wooden Spoon Award for Team of the Year. Established in 1983, Wooden Spoon is a national grant-making charity that is dedicated to helping disabled and disadvantaged children and young people through rugby. In the 32 years they have been operating an estimated 800,000 disabled children have been helped. The award to Shropshire wooden spoon was made in recognition of the hard work and commitment shown all year round and the extra effort made in organising a tag-rugby festival at Telford Hornets RFC to coincide with the UK holding the Rugby World Cup. Collecting the award for outstanding team or activity that embodies Wooden Spoon’s values were Judith Phelps, Jane Dobbs and Glyn Dobbs. Commenting on the award, Lucy Allan MP said: “It’s great for Shropshire Wooden Spoon to receive this award. I was at the rugby tournament held last summer and it was without a doubt one of the best events I attended last year. The event was well organised, with high participation rates and most importantly had a fun atmosphere. “Without the hard-work of people like Judith, Jane and Glyn events like this would not be possible. It is great to see them receive the recognition they deserve for putting on this wonderful event and I look forward to future events.”
