Local MP, Lucy Allan has today written to the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Matt Hancock MP to raise her concerns following the death of Jeffery Passmore from Stirchley, Telford.
Mr Passmore died after being taken to Royal Shrewsbury A&E where he was left waiting in a corridor for 6 hours. He had suffered an abdominal aortic aneurysm.
An expert said that had Mr Passmore been assessed and operated on he would have had a 60-70% chance of survival.
In her letter Allan has sought reassurance that this event will be properly investigated so this cannot happen again. She also raised her concerns about A&E waiting times at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust (SaTH). The MP also raised the Future Fit proposal and the time it takes for Telford residents to travel 19 miles from Telford to Shrewsbury, and concerns around the extra delay to patients being able to access care promptly. Ms Allan asked the Health Secretary to give serious consideration to the death of her constituent when he decides how to progress with Future Fit proposals.
Lucy Allan said:
“I have raised this matter with the Secretary of State, Matt Hancock to bring to his attention the serious concerns I have about this incident and how events such as this one may occur more frequently if the Future Fit proposals go ahead. Loss of facilities to Shrewsbury will increase the travel time and inevitably increase delays in accessing treatment. We can see that delays can have fatal consequences.
“We need to ensure that all patients receive prompt assessment and dealt with on a needs basis and the most critical of cases of prioritised.”
