Local MP, Lucy Allan has welcomed the Prime Minister’s announcement that the Government are boosting schools with a record £14 billion, levelling up per pupil funding across the country so every child in Telford has a world class education.
In comparison to funding for the 2019/20 academic year, which is set to be £43.5 billion, this new investment will see spending rise as follows:
- 2020/21: extra £2.6 billion
- 2021/22: extra £4.8 billion
- 2022/23: extra £7.1 billion
The school’s budget will consequently rise to £52.2 billion in 2022/23. Through this funding package, from 2021, every primary school should receive a minimum of £4,000 per pupil, and every secondary school should receive a minimum of £5,000 per pupil.
Ministers have also announced that they will provide 16-19 education providers with a £400 million funding boost for the 2020/21 financial year. This will go towards enhancing access to high quality courses, covering the cost of expensive but important courses, ensuring further education can continue to recruit high-quality teachers, and supporting the delivery of T Levels

“How you get on in life all begins at school through a decent education and I am pleased that this extra capital investment will enable children in Telford to receive a world class education and make the most of their talents.”
The Prime Minister, Rt Hon Boris Johnson MP, commented;
“When I became Prime Minster at the start of the summer, I promised to make sure every child receives a superb education – regardless of which school they attend, or where they grew up.
“ I can announce the first step in delivering on that pledge – funding per pupil in primary and secondary schools will increase and be levelled up across the entire country.
“We should not accept the idea that there can be “winners or losers” when it comes to our children’s futures. That’s why we are providing additional funding now and for the future for every school, with those historically underfunded receiving the greatest increase.
“My government will ensure all young people get the best possible start in life. That means the right funding, but also giving schools the powers, they need to deal with bad behaviour and bullying so pupils continue to learn effectively.”
