Today in Parliament, the Health Select Committee took evidence from international experts on methods of compensating victims of medical negligence, as part of its inquiry into NHS litigation reform.
The Committee explored international models and how best practice could be incorporated into the English system and how international systems operate. The Committee also considered how the current litigation process in England could be improved and the role of mediation.
Lucy Allan MP said:
"There are better more successful models of compensating those who have suffered medical negligence than the system in operation in the England. There are international models which are less costly and can help to improve patient safety through lessons learned and improved practice.
Patients who have suffered medical negligence suffer all over again going through a lengthy, adversarial system when all too often they want acknowledgment that something went wrong. This is an area which needs fundamental reform and I am pleased to be participating in this important inquiry."
