Telford is home to many fantastic businesses, and it has been important that they are protected during the coronavirus outbreak. Since March, Lucy has received hundreds of enquiries from businesses that have been impacted by the pandemic. Many were having difficulty in accessing Local Authority grants and business rates relief; Lucy worked tirelessly during this time to secure the financial support for all eligible local businesses so that they can continue to thrive.
Lucy visited several businesses, including Victoria James in Telford Town Centre, which she worked to obtain grants for and to discuss the challenges facing local business. Businesses, particular in the retail, hospitality and events industries, have been disproportionately affected by lockdown restrictions, and it was heartening to see the fantastic efforts of business owners in re-opening in a Covid-compliant manner to get our local economy back on track.
The Government’s top priority has always been to support people, protect jobs and businesses through this crisis: Telford has received unprecedented levels of support to protect jobs and livelihoods, with 12,400 local jobs being protected through the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, in addition to robust support for self-employed people and businesses.
Lucy was pleased to hear that, in many cases, the support received by businesses secured their survival throughout this difficult economic period. She would like to thank all local businesses for all they have done to kick-start our economy, and is keen to continue providing flexible support to those who need it.
As lockdown restrictions continue to be eased across the UK, it is important to look towards the future and set out a plan for economic recovery. Lucy continues to receive enquiries from residents and wants to support all individuals and businesses.
