Congratulations to Rishi Sunak on becoming Leader of the Conservative Party and next Prime Minster. He is well placed to steer the country through the challenges that lie ahead.
I know Rishi well as he became an MP in 2015 when I did. He is a decent person, bright, diligent and is the right person to be Prime Minister at this hugely challenging time. He’s also extremely humble, down to earth and engaging.
Boris Johnson had sufficient support to reach the threshold needed for a vote of members, however, he decided in the interests of the Party and the country not to stand. This was the right decision.
It was clear that too many MPs would not support Boris Johnson in Parliament which would have led to ongoing political instability. That was not an option. The most pressing need for the country is stable government and this can now be achieved.
MPs have a duty to come together to support Rishi Sunak to ensure he can get government business through Parliament. Local Conservative Party members told me their priority was to see the party unite and move forward and this is what has now happened.
The new Prime Minister has the support in Parliament to give us the stable government the country so badly needs - he can count on my full support to ensure he succeeds.
