Yesterday in Parliament, local MP Lucy Allan sponsored an event on behalf of Carers Trust to celebrate and recognise the challenges that Young Carers face in schools.
Carers Trust is a charity for and about carers. It works to improve support services and recognition for anyone living with the challenges of caring, unpaid, for a family member or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health or addiction problems.
During the event the audience heard from CEO Giles Meyer as well as hearing speeches from five young carers who had come to Parliament from around the country and who each shared their individual story about their caring responsibilities and the effects this has on their studies, grades and social life.
A key focus of the event which was highlighted by Lucy Allan and the CEO was the need to identify young carers in schools, so children can access the help and support they need. Lucy Allan will be working with the Carers Trust to raise this with Ofsted, the Children’s Minister and the Education Secretary.
Ms Allan also highlighted the work being done by Telford & Wrekin Council to help Young Carers which includes recent recommendations to identify Young Carers on enrolment, offering counselling support and better training for schools to identify and to support Young Carers.
