It’s time to move on.
Boris Johnson won a stunning election victory in 2019. He deserves full credit for that and for breaking the Brexit log jam. He resigned as Prime Minister almost a year ago and now he’s resigned as an MP. He has paid a heavy price for lockdown breaches. It’s time to let him get on with his life and time for the Country to focus on the many challenges we face.
It is long overdue to stop obsessing about Boris Johnson.
It’s sad that someone with such talent, charisma, and a huge opportunity to do so much for our country, squandered that chance. It’s particularly sad given so many of my constituents put their trust in Boris and voted Conservative for the first time.
People may say that Covid got in the way, that anti Brexit opponents, or the media blocked Boris Johnson’s path and brought him down. Yes, these were huge hurdles to be overcome, and yes, he had to deal with those who had an irrational hatred of both him and Brexit. But even the staunchest Boris supporters will recognise that he played his part in his downfall; we all bear responsibility for our actions.
But that time has now passed and it’s time to look to the future. The British people will be faced with a choice at a General Election in 2024 of a Conservative Government led by Rishi Sunak or Labour Government led by Sir Keir Starmer.
The same challenges of war, high interest rates, inflation, health service dysfunction will face both parties. There is no silver bullet for these global challenges affecting countries across the world. Anyone who claims they have simple answers to these problems is taking voters for fools.
My focus is to continue to work hard for my constituents and to get the best deal for Telford, using every opportunity that comes my way right up until the next election. That’s what I was elected to do and that is what I will do. All MPs must prioritise their constituents and put internal party strife behind them and public service first.
