Today, the Prime Minister has triggered Article 50, beginning the process to leave the European Union.
Last June, the people of Telford spoke and had their voices heard. This historic day is a significant moment for both Britain and for Telford.
As we begin the negotiations with our partners in Europe, we must ensure that our nation’s interests come first. We must be open to the opportunities that come with change and adopt an outward looking way of thinking. I know that Telford is optimistic about the future as it has always been when facing changes in the past. We are enthusiastic about the new and better partnership, which we will create with our European neighbours.
It is clear that the referendum vote last June was something more than simply voting to leave the European Union. It was a vote for change. The British people voted to restore our power and strength and to become a once again independent global nation.
I am pleased that the Prime Minister has committed to securing the right deal and the best deal for the British people. People in Telford did not vote for partial membership, they voted for a new agreement; the right to make our own decisions and to control our own laws.
I will watch closely as the process unfolds to ensure that the voice of Telford is heard in Westminster and the best deal is secured for our future.
