Today at the Health and Social Care Committee, Lucy Allan MP posed a series of questions to Simon Williams, Director of Social Care Improvement at the Local Government Association.
Lucy asked about the challenges local authorities face in delivering Social Care for residents including how best to tackle workforce vacancies and by improving the pace of assessments to ensure that people can be properly supported for all of their needs.
Local authorities can use local partnerships with the NHS and further education providers to take a holistic approach and integrate the social care system into the community. The committee also heard that it is also crucial to empower employers and staff to be more flexible in how they deliver provision within their budgets, rather than meeting arbitrary outcomes that may not reflect the need of those using the system.
Local authorities also have scope to enhance the profile of social care work at a local level and drive recruitment through partnerships with key local stakeholders.
Ensuring the social care system is fit for purpose is a priority for Lucy in Parliament.
