Telford MP Lucy Allan today welcomed the news that all care home residents in Telford and Wrekin have been offered their first dose of a vaccine. This is a very welcome milestone - ensuring that many of those at the highest risk from COVID have already been given protection.
Oxford University has now released findings that support the Government's strategy of increasing the time between both doses of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine. Furthermore, the first dose alone provides 76% efficacy, meaning that in many cases just one dose will save many lives.
It is important to note that not all care home residents will have been vaccinated at this stage - either due to them not being well enough to receive their jab or if they had Covid-19 at the time vaccinations were administered. All care home residents will have the option to receive a jab should they wish to.
As the vaccination programme continues to scale up across Telford and Shropshire, more sites are now offering vaccinations to the general public, ensuring that the number of people able to receive jabs will continue to increase exponentially.
Lucy Allan MP said:
"I would like to thank everyone in Telford who has contributed to this amazing effort. It is such a relief that those residents who are most at risk from the virus have now been protected with their first doses. It is amazing to see the results of a concerted effort by the NHS, care providers, GPs and local and central Government to accelerate the rollout and save lives. The vaccination programme has been a real success so far and continues in scale. I would encourage every resident to book a slot as soon as it is offered."
